I don’t know about you but I find running a car to be one of our biggest household expenses apart from rent. With fuel, car tax, insurance all taking out a large chunk of our monthly budget plus regular checks on tyres, oil levels – getting it valeted and then getting it MOT’d every year… the costs can be astounding when you think about it. Obviously we try to be as savvy as we can – making regular checks so we don’t get hit with a massive MOT bill – but the costs really can run up. When a car is a necessity for commuting and family life though, these are costs you just learn to swallow.
I recently used the car cost calculator on the Motorparks website to work out how much our car is costing us. It was quite an eye opener to see how much the fuel and general costs were costing us each day.
The costs are worked out via a number of different questions – how much fuel costs, how many miles to the gallon your car uses, how many miles you commute each day and for how many days. Insurance, road tax, finance payments and breakdown cover are also factored in and it is quite interesting to see what costs you are incurring per day – fuel is less than I thought it would be but the car in general is around what I would have expected for the car, knowing how much we paid out last year.
The cost calculator even gives out some fab tips on how to reduce the cost from savvy saving when it comes to fuel and buying wisely when opting for a new car or simply by reducing the speed, weight or air con use of the car.
