How can you stop your second-hand car becoming a money pit? In some cases wear and tear on older models will mean, unfortunately, you can’t but there are things you can do to minimise excess damage during your ownership.
Regular Services
Having your car serviced at regular intervals will help you to identify any potential problems. Your mechanic can repair and note anything major to advise you upon completion. A car service should be carried out every year or every 12,000 miles whatever comes first.
Service is vital and will check components of your car such as filters, lights, spark plugs, oil and more. It will give you a good indication of the condition of your car and will help to remove any build or minor issues when driving. Having your car serviced regularly can help to expand the lifespan of the vehicle as parts are replaced and maintained and not worn down to dangerous levels.
Regular Part Checks
Making sure you are aware of things such as the oil and water levels in your engine and have some available in a spare kit in your car will help you to avoid any major issues such as engines seizing up and overheating. Similarly, perform checks on your lights at regular intervals to make sure they are working, especially before long journeys in the dark. Simply turn your rights on after dark and walk around your car to check they are all working. For your brake lights and reverse lights, get someone to stand behind the car or perform the check in front of a wall or building to see the reflection on the surface behind you.
Always check the tread on your tyres and make sure any tyre trims you have are securely attached. If you have alloy wheels, make sure they are in good condition and free from any damage that can cause problems when driving by making sure you maintain them with a company such as just wheel repair.
Act on Issues Right Away
More modern cars will have a complex system in place that can advise you of issues in a more specific capacity than a light coming on on your dashboard. Always listen out for any new sounds, knocks clunks or simply a feeling that something isn’t right when driving the car. Caught early, many mistakes can be easier to fix as the problem is contained to a specific area. However, left unresolved, some issues can cause damage to other parts of the car and make it a more costly and time-consuming fix.
