There may come a time in your life when you are fed up with the career you’re in and want to try something new. This could be because you’ve done your current position for a long time now and feel you want a new challenge, it could be because there’s no more progression, or it might be because you just want a change. No matter the reason, changing careers doesn’t need to be daunting and there are a few things you can do to make it easier. It can feel like a bit of a minefield at first, but these tips should help. Here are our top pieces of advice for changing careers.
Think about transferable skills
When it comes to changing careers, one of the things you want to consider is whether the skills you already have can be utilised somewhere else. If you already work in marketing for example, you could be good in a job with social media, photography or as a writer. This is because the skills you have built up and used in your marketing role would easily be transferred to these other positions. While you might need some training to hone in on your individual expertise, it will be a lot easier than starting something from scratch.
Consider if you want to stay in the same field or go for something completely different
When changing careers, think about if you are doing so because you want a change or if you are just not liking the company you are at. It could be that you would like your job role (say if you are at a Solicitors) if you were at a better company as opposed to the one you’re in at the moment, you might find your mind changes. It might be worth doing some research and looking at different businesses to see what roles they have open in your field and if you can progress that way.
Check the salary and that you can afford a change
One of the most important things when it comes to changing careers is checking that you can afford to do so. Changing to do something completely new or different might mean you have to take a salary cut for a while as you learn the ropes. This can be ok, but it also could put you in a sticky financial position if you don’t have the funds saved to cover the money you will lose. On the other hand, you might find a role that actually pays you more, so look out for these and see what you can get!
These are just a few things that can help you when it comes to changing careers. If you aren’t happy with the job you are currently in, it’s a good idea to change it up for your mental well-being as well as your daily fulfilment with your job.
