Building My Credit Score Back Up

Sponsored Post

I had been avoiding checking for a while.. that ominous credit score, like shame hanging over my head. When Steve and I first started dating, the tables were completely turned – mine was great and his was shocking. But over the years as he’s stayed in his full time job with a regular wage coming in and I made the jump to working from home as self employed with an unreliable income, mine has taken a tumble down the ratings whilst his continues to rise.

I finally checked last week and whilst it wasn’t as bad as it could have been and still nowhere near as bad as some people I know, I aim to get that back up into at least the ‘good’ section by the end of 2017. I’ve talked about my money resolutions for 2017 over on my lifestyle blog and building my credit score back up is just one of them. But how do I aim to do that?

  • I want to clear all or most of my debts. By clearing any outstanding debts I have, this should remove some things from my score and help it to rise.
  • Make sure all payments go out on time – and that there is money in my account to cover it. I’m even paying early for some things – for instance, my credit card payment is due on the 19th but this month I paid on the 4th as I had the money spare to cover it and still had enough for any bills that come before then. I keep a close eye on my online banking and will chase any invoices if overdue or even if not if payment hasn’t been received within the promised time – I will have earmarked that income for a particular bill so I will chase it to make sure I receive it on time so I can pay any payments on time – and stop my credit score from getting even lower.
  • I want to be accepted for credit in the future. Right now I probably won’t get accepted for credit – except maybe pay day loans bad credit – and whilst I am currently trying to clear certain credit right now, I want to be able to be accepted in the future should the need arise – and I will probably need a better credit score for this to happen.
  • I don’t want that feeling of dread. I avoided checking so long because of this intense feeling of dread – and that is not something I want to feel any longer. I want to get rid of it so by working on building my score back up, I will hopefully no longer have to feel it.

Have you got any tips for building your credit score back up? I’d love to hear them!
