We tend to think of leadership in pretty narrow terms; it’s the person that’s steering the ship, right? Well, not quite. The world of leadership is always in flux, and reflects the climate. In the olden days, it might have been that the leader was the owner of the business, but that was just because companies were much smaller than today. Now, there’s a need for multiple leaders in the same organization, since there are so many different aspects to a company.
Leadership also changes when the demands of the business world change. Today, for example, there’s a much greater emphasis on information: indeed, this is ‘the information age.’ A company that knows how to make the most of the vast quantities of information at their disposal will be in a strong position to navigate the future.
Since ‘information’ has risen to prominence so rapidly, there hasn’t been the related leadership advancement required to manage it correctly. Traditionally, leadership was all about teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, and the like. But that won’t cut it when it comes to information, which is more digital than it is personal. As such, leadership in this field includes knowing which information to keep and which to discard, how to research the data thoroughly, and creating digital preservation systems.
This role is important now, but it’s likely to become even more important in the future, especially as information and data become even more important. Take a look at the infographic below to learn more about this topic.
