Not too long ago I wrote a post about making money blogging. This detailed if it can be done and some ways to do it. Today I thought I would share how I personally make money blogging alongside my freelance work.
I have been blogging for four years over on my lifestyle blog and a year and a half on this blog. Over that time I’ve made money via blogging in a number of different ways.
I currently make money via blogging in four different ways – advertising, sponsored posts, sponsored social media shares and affiliate links.
ADVERTISING
I currently use Adsense for my adverts and also offer advertising to companies who contact me directly. From all of the different ad networks around that I have the right amount of page views for, Adsense is definitely the best one for me. I may make pennies one day and a couple of pounds the next – I never know what that day will bring – but it adds up nicely and I’ve been paid a few times. Prices for advertising that I am contacted about vary depending on how long they want the advert up and whilst this doesn’t bring in much, it is a nice option to have.
SPONSORED POSTS
These are where I probably make the most money when it comes to making money blogging. I am mainly contacted directly by the companies or the PR company they are dealing with but opportunities are often available on Twitter or in blogging groups on Twitter and some websites have opportunities too – they’re all around if you look. Just remember to make sure the topic suits your blog!
SPONSORED SOCIAL MEDIA SHARES
Again this isn’t one I do often but I have a few companies I occasionally work with who ask me to share some things on social media for a fee. These tweets or shares (always fully disclosed) can often provoke a decent discussion too and sharing before has actually gained me new followers.
AFFILIATE LINKS
If used correctly, affiliate links can be very lucrative. There are a number of different affiliate networks out there that you can join and some bloggers even offer their own affiliate scheme for the items they have for sale – I am currently a member of Amazon Affiliates, Commission Junction and a few affiliate schemes run by bloggers. I don’t use affiliate links that often but when I do, I do see a good amount of income.
With all of these different forms of income, it pays to be organised with my finances. I am currently considering hiring an accountant to help me with all of my financial paperwork ready to file my tax return – I’ve heard good things about some accountants from other people including an accountant in Manchester but I haven’t yet found someone in my area who comes with excellent recommendations.
Hopefully I will find that person soon! If you’re a blogger, how do you make money?
Note: As I am also a freelance writer, I don’t include that in how I make money blogging. Some include freelance work as part of their blog income but I consider it a separate entity.
