The Next Step?

Today I want to talk about the next step. What do I mean by this? I mean the next financial step we shall be taking. We are currently taking a pro active approach to cutting down our debts and saving money – and we are paying over the minimum amount to our debts each month as well as making our savings account grow too. So what should be our next step?

We are currently renting a house – we’ve been living here since January 2012 – and we have been engaged since September 2012. Which should realistically come first? Please tell me I am not wrong in thinking that a permanent base should be at the forefront of our minds, no matter how much we want to get married?

A very good friend of mine, her fiance and their son currently live between her house with her parents and his house with his and are getting married in the next few months. They are on the list for housing but are still saving little by little for a house deposit.

I suppose because I have been engaged for a lot longer (with little to nothing happening in the wedding planning department) means I just don’t understand. I would love nothing more to be married to my partner but I feel the home should come first – as that will benefit us all. We will eventually get the wedding we dream of but it doesn’t have to be now…does it?

We have tried to get a mortgage in the past but were unable to due to my partners bad credit. Since then, I got into bad credit but have been working my way out of it and recently noticed that I am in the top section for credit – a long cry from a year or two ago when I was at the lower end! We considered using either of our father’s as a guarantor, we even considered using a guarantor loan and we also inevitably made some bad decisions that left us in a worse mess..however we gave up on that dream for a couple of years to see if we could get ourselves out of the hole we had dug ourselves into and make our lives better.

I think what I am trying to ask is…is it bad that I consider the next step in our lives to be buying a house? We will eventually get married but we don’t need a piece of paper to show we love each other but we do need a base and renting just isn’t giving us that security. What are your thoughts?
