Spare rooms are potential gold mines and they just need you to be a little creative to get the best out of them. Many believe that spare rooms should be turned into bedrooms but this is only good for some homes. If you already have 4-5 bedrooms, adding one more is not that wise. You don’t want a cramped household either. Guests won’t want to be in the way of a busy household and sleep in what is probably going to be one of the smaller bedrooms. But you don’t need to leave it empty either, you should think outside the box and perhaps give some of these ideas a go.
You may be able to convert your bedroom into a nest for travelers. You don’t have to buy a bed at all, just a comfortable sleeping platform like a foam mattress which you can put on the floor. Many Airbnb travelers want something affordable and able to give them 1-2 nights of rest before they head-on with their travel plans. You can have some basic creature comforts like a chair and a desk, a place to dry their clothes and maybe a small fridge for them to keep their locally bought produce. If you want extended stays such as 5-7 days, or 2 weeks then you should get a bed if you can.
Convert it into a bedroom/home office
Many people that are looking to rent a room that is in a neighborhood and provides them with a good space to work from home, are happy to rent the room out long-term. You may want to consider taking in a lodger who would like somewhere to work as well as treat as their room. So think about creating as much space as you can. Put a desk in the room and see how much space it is available to walk around, get dressed, groom oneself, and more. In general, you should leave about 3-5-foot from the bed to the desk, allowing for the two areas to get their own space, especially if they are working from home at the moment.

A reading haven
Not many homeowners can say they own a library or reading haven, but your spare room could be the ticket to the bragging rights you want. You can create a reading room whereby you have lounge chairs, a coffee machine and all your books in one place. You just need to consider the type of bookshelves you want, or bookcase, and the type of seating as well as the features of the room. You might want it to have a TV which you can use to listen to the radio or watch a show about a book you are reading.
There are tons of things you can do with your spare room. You just need to be creative and make as much usable space as possible. So whether it’s a lodger, a traveler, or a reading haven, put effort into it and it shall bear fruit.
